On November 10, 2020, we were scheduled to have a Virtual Meetup with the management of Tesla Energy in Tampa to discuss Tesla Solar Roof.  However, due last-minute personnel changes in Tampa, management from the Orlando office graciously agreed to substitute.  I was very appreciative that Brock Jamison, General Manager, Energy Operations, and Sean Hirlinger, Associate Manager - Solar Roof, planned to join us on short notice.  To kick things off, we provided them with some questions in advance.

However, when it came time to have the Video conference, we ran into another hurdle.  We didn't know that the Tesla private network had built-in security which prevented them from accessing Zoom from their network.

In true Tesla fashion, Brock and his team figured out a workaround. One of his managers was able to join us with the PowerPoint slides, and Brock phoned in on audio to do most of the discussion.  In addition to Brock and Sean, I want to thank Eric Riffe, Associate Manager, Energy Operations, and Drew Schuler, Technical Training Specialist, for assisting in the questions and answers.

In response to a question about solar panels during hurricane, the Tesla Energy folks sent me this article:

Tyndall Air Force Base Proves Solar Not Just For Power Anymore

There's a link in the article to a short video worth watching.

Please scroll down to the bottom of the article for updated status.

An article in the Palm Coast Observer on January 31, 2020, identified the probable location of a "Coming Soon" Supercharger on the Tesla Find Us map.  According to the article, Palm Coast Wawa to open in May, with Tesla Superchargers to follow, "The Wawa under construction at Bulldog Drive and State Road 100 should be open in May, and Tesla is in talks to have eight Superchargers for electric vehicles on the site."

Here's a vicinity map: (For a full-sized image, click on the map.)

Update as of August 15, 2020.

The eagle-eyed editor of Supercharge.info, the unofficial website that tracks Supercharger installations, has located another active permit application for this future Supercharger Station.

The Wawa's address is 5600 FL-100 East, Palm Coast, FL 32164.

Although the application doesn’t specifically mention Tesla, it does describe an Electric Vehicle Charging Station at this location. Rack Electric, Tesla’s most frequently used electrical contractor in Florida, is also listed as the assigned contractor. So, we can be pretty sure that this will be another Supercharger Station at a Wawa.

Updated as of August 22, 2020.

A member of the Tesla Motors Club forum located the proposed plans for this future Supercharger Station.  Here are some of excerpts.

Above is the overall site plan of the new Wawa.  The Supercharger installation will be constructed in the upper right corner of the plan.

Above is an enlargement of the upper right corner of the previous plan showing the Supercharger Station Components.

Above are the construction notes and legend for the previous plan. The plans show that there will be 8 Version 3 charging stalls.  The large structure in the center is the Wawa's trash and recycling compound.  Facing north, the utility transformer for the Supercharger will be located to the left of the compound and to the left of the existing utility transformer serving the Wawa.  The rest of the Supercharger equipment will be installed to the right of the compound.  Four of the charging stalls will be located directly to the right of the compound the other four will be located directly south of the compound.

Update as of August 26, 2020.

A permit was issued on August 26, 2020.

Update as of October 8 2020.

Tesla has started staging the equipment.  The white covered boxes are the version 3 Supercharger cabinets.  They will be set on a concrete pad behind them on the green space.  Four charging posts will be installed in the parking spaces going off to the left.

Update as of October 26, 2020.

The following four photos are of Rack Electric, Tesla's electrical contractor making ready to break ground.

In addition to the four charging posts mentioned in the previous photo, four additional charging posts will be installed in the area shown in this photo above.

This photo was taken facing south. Facing south the Supercharger cabinets and main switchgear will be installed to the left of this trash and recycling compound doorway. The utility power transformer and meter will be installed to the right of the doorway.

    Updated October 28, 2020.

The Tesla contractor has broken ground.  Here they are starting to lay out the concrete pad for the Supercharger cabinets and switchgear.

Update as of October 30, 2020.

Work continues on placing the conduit bends prior to pouring the concrete pad for the Supercharger cabinets and switchgear.

Update as of November 1, 2020.

A close up of the concrete pad for the two version 3 Supercharger cabinets and the main switchgear.  You can see the foundation and conduit stubs for four of the charging posts.

Here you can see three of the four charging post that run from right to left along the side of the trash and recycling compound, and four of the charging posts that run along the rear of the compound.  In the brown boxes the charging post enclosures are being staged.  The two white boxes are the version 3 Supercharger cabinets.

Here is a close up of the Supercharger cabinets and one of the enclosures for the charging posts.

Update as of November 7, 2020.

    Nearing completion.

Update as of November 8, 2020.

This photo shows all 8 charging posts.

Technicians working on the utility transformer.  To the left is the meter cabinet, but the meter has not yet been installed.

Update as of November 13, 2020.

This Supercharger Station is now operational.

This sign was posted at the new construction site for the Port St. Lucie Supercharger Expansion.

Those old timers among us may remember that the Port St. Lucie Supercharger Station was the first station to open in Florida back in July 2013. At the time, it was a very big deal and Tesla arranged for a ribbon-cutting ceremony along with some dignitaries.

Here's a photos I pulled from my archives of that momentous event:

Former State Representative Adam Hasner, former Port St Lucie Mayor, JoAnn Faiella, and former Tesla executive Kevin Kassekert cut the ribbon for the first Supercharger in Florida. The mayor had the foresight to contact Tesla to propose the installation of the station.  In those days virtually no one knew Tesla, what a Supercharger was, and why you would want a station in your community.

Please scroll down to the bottom of the page for updates.

Fast-forward almost 7 years and Tesla is expanding the Supercharger Station. Recently a member of the Tesla Motors Club forum discovered the beginning of construction.

We don’t have much information yet, but I did find some public records confirming the expansion.

    Here's a couple of photos:

Updated as of June 21, 2020.

There are 6 Supercharging terminals shown in the following photos.  They are located across from the Benjamin Moore Paint store and Moe's Southwest Grill.

If it turns out that there are only six terminals, then that would suggest that this will be a version 2 Supercharger Station with three Supercharger cabinets and two terminals per Supercharger.  We will have to wait to see what develops.

Update as of June 23, 2020.

The above photo was taken at the existing Supercharger location. It is possible that Tesla will be installing the new Supercharger cabinets, switchgear and new utility transformer to the left of the existing location, or will be enlarging the existing Supercharger enclosure to accommodate more equipment. If so, the conduits may contain high-voltage cables running from the  existing utility transformer to a new second utility transformer to power the expansion.

Update as of July 5, 2020.

This photo was taken to the left of the original Supercharger location.  It appears that two more charging terminals are going in at the original location for a total of 10.

To power the two new terminals, plus the six additional terminal across from the paint store, are four more version 2 Supercharger cabinets.

Correction: These cabinets are the original version 2 cabinets installed in 2013. My confusion was caused by the removal of the enclosure around them making me erroneously conclude that they were newly installed.

Update as of July 22, 2020

One of our readers visited the site and spoke to a Tesla employee monitoring the charger speeds. The employee explained that they have been plagued with problems from the beginning and do not know when they'll be functional. He mentioned that the water table was high, and they're working on it.

Update as of August 6, 2020.

This photo is taken from the the back of the existing, operational Superchargers.  It shows the original Supercharger cabinets, on the right, that are powering the existing 8 charging terminals. The gray boxes to the left of the Supercharger cabinets are the original main switchgear, and the green box to the extreme left is the original utility transformer.  All of the this was originally hidden by the white enclosure that can be seen in the first photo.

This is another view from the rear showing the utility transformer in the foreground on the left, the switchgear and the old version 2 Supercharger cabinets.

This photo is also from the rear and it is to the right of the previous photos. It shows what appears to be a covered charging terminal on the extreme left.  Again, this is located at the existing Supercharger Station.  You can see the 6 new charging terminals in the background in front of the paint store.

Update as of September 12, 2020.

Not much progress has been made, but the following photos provide excellent views of the current situation.

These are the new charging terminals located across from the paint store. The construction fencing around them has been removed, but as can be seen they are still covered.

This photo is of the original Supercharger equipment installed in July 2013. The original white enclosure, as seen in the first photo, has been removed.

Facing the original Supercharger installation, this photo is taken to the left.  It shows one of the original charging terminals is covered and inaccessible due to the expansion construction.  It appears to me that Tesla will be installing two more new charging terminals to the left of the the existing covered terminal. I am guessing that after Tesla overcomes the water table problem that they will install additional new Supercharger equipment in this general area to the left of the existing equipment.

Update as of November 2, 2020.

These are four additional version 2 Supercharger cabinets.  It will power two additional charging post adjacent to the original Supercharger location, plus the six new charging posts located across from the paint store.

If you work or live nearby, please periodically visit the site to take high-resolution photos of the construction progress and send them to me.

    Thanks.

For a while, the only “Coming Soon” Supercharger Station for the Space Coast listed on Tesla’s Find Us map was the Cocoa West location. However, recently someone tweeted photos of a Supercharger Station breaking ground in Titusville.

The tweet didn’t provide a site, but after doing a lot of Googling for good candidate locations, I found a Target store located at 3055 Columbia Blvd #101, Titusville, FL 32780.  As you may recall, Tesla has an arrangement with Target in which Target will host Supercharger Stations.

After doing a bit of Google street views of the Target parking lot, they match up with the photo posted on twitter.

This will be a version 3, 16-stall Supercharger Station.  As is Target’s practice, they have requested that Tesla install SAE J1772 destination chargers as well. They will probably be two dual connector ChargePoint chargers that will accommodate four EVs.

    Here’s a vicinity map:

This particular Target is in an excellent spot located off of I-95 and nicely splitting the distance between the Port Orange and West Melbourne Supercharger Stations.

    Here are some photos:

The white boxes with the "crosshair" markings are the four version 3 Supercharger cabinets.  So, this will be a 16-stall installation.

Here is the precise location in the northeast corner of the Target parking lot where the charging stalls will be located.  The 16 charging stalls will be located as marked by the red rectangles, 10 plus 6.  The Supercharger equipment will be installed in the tree space between the stalls.  The destination chargers will be accessible via four stalls adjacent to the 6 Supercharger stalls.

These are the beginning of the foundations for 10 charging terminals.

These are the foundations for the additional 6 charging terminals.  The two foundations closest are for the destination chargers.

Here is where the Supercharger cabinets and associated equipment will be mounted.

A close up of one of the charging terminal conduit.

Update as of October 11, 2020.

The four large white boxes are version 3 Supercharger cabinets.  I believe that the grey box in the middle is an autotransformer to boost the voltage. The boxes under the covering may be the main switchgear.  I am not sure why there are two meter cabinets. I believe that the small grey cabinet on the right is the Master Control Cabinet used to maintain remote access to the station.

This is the utility power transformer.

These are six foundations for Supercharger charging terminals.  The additional two terminals nearest are for SAE J1772 destination chargers to accommodate up to four EVs.

Here are the foundations for an additional 10 Supercharger terminals.

Updated as of October 16, 2020.

The previous series of four photos show work proceeding on the charging posts.

This photo is of the main switchgear on the left, the four version 3 Supercharger cabinets, and the meter cabinets.

This is a closeup of the switchgear.

On the right is one of the two Dual Port ChargePoint Level 2 Chargers.  A club member informs me that these Level 2 chargers are active.

Update as of October 17, 2020.

A closeup of two meter cabinets.  One is sealed and the other is awaiting the utility to install the socket meter.

Update as of October 18, 2020.

Here's a photo of all 16 Supercharger posts.

Update as of October 19, 2020.

The Titusville Supercharger Station is Operational.

Today, the Tesla Find Us map shows an active Supercharger in Titusville, but when you click on the pin, it shows the "Coming Soon" Cocoa West Supercharger Station.  This suggests that this Titusville location replaces the Cocoa West location.

Click the link below to view a YouTube video by Rafael Santoni, president of Tesla Owners South Florida.

The new Superchargers location at Titusville is now live.

Rafael took the video on October 18 and at the time he mentioned that the Supercharge Station was unannounced.  As of today, October 19, 2020, as shown above it is displaying on our navigations systems and on the Find Us map in a provisional status.  I expect Tesla to update the Find Us map to remove the reference to Cocoa West.

    A nice healthy charge rate.

The Tesla Find Us map lists a “Coming Soon” Supercharger Station in Daytona Beach opening this year. I was able to locate the permit application and plans from public records.

This will be a 12-terminal Version 3 Supercharger Station located at the Target Department Store located at 2380 W International Speedway Blvd, Daytona Beach, FL 32114.  It is about a mile off exit 9 of I-95 and only seven miles from the Port Orange Supercharger. Being nearby should help elevate the frequent congestion that occurs at Port Orange.

    Here is the vicinity map:

Below, is the exact location of the Supercharger Station in the Target parking lot.

The above two images are of the Supercharger site plan and construction notes. They show that there will be 11 back-in Supercharger terminals and one pull-in Supercharger terminal.  They also show that Tesla will be installing two ChargePoint Dual Port Level 2 chargers which will include for more parking stalls in addition to the 12 for the Superchargers.

The permit application was submitted on June 23, 2020, and issued on July 14, 2020, so construction may have started.

Update as of August 28, 2020.

On August 28, 2020 it was reported that construction started.

Update as of October 13, 2020.

Here's a recent YouTube video of the current construction by Mark Dickenson.  Mark counts 16 stalls, but four of them are for the level 2 ChargePoint chargers that are being installed.

New Tesla v3 chargers in DAYTONA BEACH under construction

Update as of October 14, 2020.

From the previous video all of the 12 charging posts have been installed. In this photo technicians are working on one of the three version 3 Supercharger cabinets.

If you live or work in the area, please take some high-resolution photos of the construction progress and email them to me.

On October 10, 2020, twenty club members and their guests enjoyed a special day at the Daytona International Speedway.  We were treated to an hour and a half Speedway Tour. It included an open-air tram ride of the track, a tour of the "World Center of Racing," and a photo opportunity at Victory Lane. Daytona treated us A-plus, and everyone had a great time.  It was a safe event; we all wore face masks and were socially distanced.

Thanks go to Tom Siceloff for organizing this fun time.

Jess Schultz with the Chamber & Economic Partnership in Ocala participated in the ribbon-cutting ceremony.

The Electrified Garage Open House on October 4 was a huge success despite early torrential downpours. The weather cleared, and an estimated 200 “masked” and socially distanced guests welcomed Electrified Garage to Florida. The Ocala Chamber of Commerce was on hand for the official ribbon-cutting ceremony, complete with a champagne toast!

Masked and socially distanced -The Villages Tesla Club held their monthly meeting ahead of The Electrified Garage Open House.

This huge tent came in handy during the rain.

    Complete with food truck.

    Backstory

In 2016, Rich Benoit, an IT manager, and Tesla enthusiast was curious if he could re-build a totaled Tesla. In doing so, he created his YouTube channel, “Rich Rebuilds” with videos about buying, repairing, and mining Teslas for spare parts. Fast forward to the present, and now Rich is an Internet sensation with over 700,000 subscribers and more than 2 million annual views.

In 2018, Rich partnered with a former parts manager for Tesla, Chris Salvo, to open up their repair shop, The Electrified Garage in New Hampshire. Chris is also the founder of EV Tuning, an online store that sells parts and accessories to electric vehicle owners.

Joining Rich and Chris as a co-owner of The Electrified Garage and staring in Electrified Garage videos with Rich and Chris is Chad Hrencecin.  Chad is a former Senior Service Technician with Tesla.

Now, Chris moved to Florida, joined our club, and opened their second Electrified Garage in Ocala.

They are located at 1829 NW 10th St, Ocala, FL 34475.

    Telephone: 352-354-9006

Rich explains, “The reason why we exist here is anything that your Tesla Service Center would offer, we could offer that service as well.  We are trying to break through and become a third-party resource for EV repair, not only Teslas.”

Click here for a 5-minute video.

At this open house, club members were able to engage owners Chris, Rich, and Chad, see rare early Tesla Roadsters, a Model 3 Lamborghini EV conversion, witness some wildly wrapped Teslas from SIGNATURE Customs Wraps & Coatings, and interact with other vendors.  There was a food truck, a huge tent for outside activities and the Tesla Orlando Store provided test drives.

Even “Elon“ came out for the big day!

Angelia Link, president of The Villages Tesla Club and our club's Event Coordinator in the Central Region, did her usual outstanding job of assisting in the arrangements.
